Old and New
Ma Văn Kháng, one of the writers that I really like, in one of my favorite books of his “Mùa lá rụng trong vườn”, made a character said: “After this generation of television and refrigerator, where will we head to? We will just return to the fundamental values.” The book was written in the 80s, by now, Mr Kháng would know that we didn’t return, after television, we have internet, smartphone and tablet.
Of course, the character that said that was an old man. Only old people would say we should return to the old time. They say that was good time, but actually they means the time when they had control of things. Old people never learn, and they forget things really easily. Do they remember the time when they were young and criticized by the old people of their time?
The way forward is the way of progression. And progressive is always better than conservative. Remember when people say vinyl disks have better sound? Now where are they the vinyls? And now people complain about smart phones and say that we should read books? It is not about technology, look the society at large too.
